HISTORY

Centuries of History rooted

in Florence

Centuries of History rooted

in Florence

11TH CENTURY

Villa di Masseto traces its beginnings to the 11th century, when a defensive tower was built on the hill overlooking the Arno valley. This early structure served as a strategic watchpoint for the Florentine countryside and became the first architectural core of the estate.

12TH CENTURY

The distinguished Guadagni family established their residence at Masseto, transforming it from a fortified rural outpost into a noble estate, building the Villa around the original tower. Throughout the century, despite periods of exile during the Guelph–Ghibelline conflicts, the family maintained their ties to the property, which symbolised their longstanding presence and influence in the Florentine territory.

15TH CENTURY

The villa took on its enduring identity in the 15th century, when the current Renaissance residence was built around a central courtyard lined with an elegant loggia. The Guadagni adorned the villa with their coat of arms and developed formal gardens, giving Masseto the architectural harmony and grace that still define it today.

21ST CENTURY

The Villa was acquired and underwent a complete and sensitive restoration. The tower was rebuilt, Renaissance features were recovered, and the entire complex was structurally renewed while respecting its original style. What had been a decaying estate has been revived into a dignified residence that honours nearly a thousand years of Florentine history.
